Day Activities

Each day, several of the below activities will be offered to Eagle Base participants, as well as those in the Day Trek program from Camp Liberty and Camp Freedom. Schedules will be tailored to the individual preferences of each Scout. At least six participants including one adult are required for an activity to run. Each participant will select preferences with the online system prior to camp or on Sunday during check-in. The final schedule will be published at dinner.

Each of the activities is ranked in regards to the physical activity and the skill level:

  • The physical rating is from 1 to 5: 5 being the most strenuous activity and 1 being the easiest, not very demanding.
  • The skill level is A to C with A demanding a high skill set and C being appropriate for all participants.

Canoeing (2C)
Explore the Youghiogheny River as you float and paddle through time. Travel the route of historical figures and learn some the area’s history.

Caving and Rapelling (3B)
Laurel Caverns is the largest cave in Pennsylvania with unusual formations to interest both the avid spelunker and casual visitor. Spend the day exploring the cave and rappeling cliff.

Fly Fishing (1C)
After an introduction to terminology and bug life, head out for some casting practice. Learn basic knots and attach flies. Now off to the Youghiogheny River, to see what we can catch. What’s for dinner?

Hiking (3C)
Enjoy the Ohiopyle State Park while exploring floral, fauna and amazing rock formations. See the 30 foot bridal veil waterfall on Cucumber Run and don’t miss the water slides at Meadow Run.

Kayaking (3B)
Learn the basics of kayaking while exploring the 2,840 acre Youghiogheny River Lake. Paddle with your friends and enjoy a day on the water.

Mountain Biking (5A)
Start the day with a safety briefing and orientation to the mountain bikes. Then enjoy the ride on single track and windy trails through the Ohiopyle State Park.

Pedal and Paddle (2C)
Pedal nine miles upstream through the Ohiopyle State Park. At the end of the ride swap your bike for a ducky and relax as you float down the class I-II Middle Yough. Don’t forget a few dollars to get ice cream in Ohiopyle.

Project C.O.P.E. (2B)
Get a taste of adventure at our newly expanded Project C.O.P.E. course. Enjoy team building and challenging low course events. Test your limits, 20 feet in the air, on our high course and zip line.

Rock Climbing (3B)
Head to the Ohiopyle area and learn from professionals at Wilderness Voyageurs all about climbing and rapelling on natural rock. Enjoy the day climbing to the top and rapelling down.

Sporting Clays (3A)
Are you all about breaking clays? Head to the Nemacolin Shooting Academy and learn the basics of shotgun shooting. Then take your turn on one of the nation’s top sporting clays courses.

Trail Biking (3B)
Start the day with a safety briefing and orientation to the trail bikes. Then enjoy the ride the Allegheny Passage Trail as you wind though the Laurel Highlands. A great introduction to trail riding.

Whitewater Rafting (4B)
Whether this is your first whitewater rafting trip or you are an experienced rafter, the class III-IV Lower Yough, in the heart of the Laurel Highlands, is a blast.
